PYC 2016

The Pilipinx Youth Conference is a three-day event hosted by BRIDGE: Pilipinx Outreach & Retention, held at the University of California, Davis. PYC aims to promote higher education, cultural awareness and social justice activism through workshops, creative expression, and self-application. PYC is open to all high school students of different ethnicities, socioeconomic statuses, and gender who have the passion to grow and learn. Additionally, PYC fosters a mentorship program through the creation of pamilyas (families) led by college students, who play the role of mentors. The conference will be held at the UC Davis campus on the weekend of February 5th-7th, 2016.

THEME | Companion. Oneness. Freedom. The prefix “ka-” is from the Pilipinx Baybayin writing that means “unity,” which in turn means that you cannot take one without the other. Together they represent parts of an identity, but can encompass so much more. We struggle to encapture Kasama, Kaisahan, and Kalayaan into our lives.

Kasama is more than a friend; it is someone who remains connected to you through it all.
Kaisahan means that although we are all different, we are united as one community.
Kalayaan goes beyond the political, but freedom of the mind, identity, and life.

The annual Pilipinx Youth Conference 2016: “Kasama, Kaisahan, Kalayaan” provides a space for youth to explore their own identity and discover where we have come from, where we are now, and where we are going.

From the landing of the Spanish to the present: together, united, we are free.

What does the “x” mean?

The purpose of using “x” in “Pilipinx” is to allow for the FilAm community to be gender inclusive, meaning it includes all those who identify and don’t identify within the gender spectrum. This can include, but is not limited to: trans and gender-queer folx.
