Southeast Asian Retreat 2015: Through the Eyes of Another

In times of rapid social change, it's difficult but important to reframe our perspectives to see through the lens of others, whether in familial, political, social, or community settings. This year's Southeast Asian Retreat theme "Through the Eyes of Another" focuses on consciousness through identity exploration, awareness, and allyship.

The goal of this three day, two night retreat is to bring to the forefront issues that affect Southeast Asians (SEA) and Southeast Asian Americans (SEAA). We hope to empower the participants to gain awareness and take ownership of their identities in order to navigate and explore the SEAA culture as well as the greater community.

Historically, the SEA community has lacked visibility in not only higher education, politics, workforce, and media, but our hxstories and stories have also faced misrepresentation in our society. This retreat serves as a safe space to share our stories, experiences, and resources to strengthen our bonds in our community. Before we can take any steps to right the wrongs against our community, we have to step up and learn, discuss, and gain awareness of who we are and what we want. As daunting as this sounds, we do not have to venture alone. This retreat is a safe space where we can embark on this journey together.
