Chicanx/Latinx Leadership Retreat 2017

The Chicanx/Latinx Leadership retreat is an annual 3-day, 2-night event planned by the Chicanx/Latinx Holistic Student Support program, SOL y LUNA and the Chicanx/Latinx community. The retreat explores and discusses political, cultural, social and academic issues to assist all students, specially first years and transfers in their transition to UC Davis. Through shared experiences participants benefit from peer-to-peer support, community building, and personal reflection. The retreat allows continuing students, faculty, and staff to bestow upon new incoming students valuable information, experience, and words of encouragement. Throughout the retreat there will be icebreakers, homegroups/familias time, and workshops that will help students get to know themselves and each other better.

Our theme for this year’s Chicanx/Latinx Leadership and Empowerment Retreat is “We are H.E.R.E.: Healing, Educating, Resisting and Excelling.” This year’s theme is to acknowledge that we are attending an institution that was never created for us, and that we got here despite all odds. It’s also to acknowledge that we are here together as a community, meaning you are not alone. It’s necessary to also bring up that we are also here, on stolen lands, and must acknowledge and pay respect to Indigenous people that have been displaced, exploited, and how our benefit of attending UC Davis is at their continual expense. This retreat will center aspects of healing, educating, resisting, and excelling, and what that looks like for our community especially given the political and environmental climate.

Our goals for this retreat is for participants to feel a stronger sense of agency, safety, socio/political consciousness, autonomy, and community. What this means is we want participants to understand they hold power for themselves and their community, that learning and unlearning is an ongoing process and vital for growth, that they can take initiative and be leaders, and that they know they are not alone in navigating this university and in life.
