Pilipinx Empowerment Retreat 2017
The Pilipinx Empowerment Retreat (PER) is an annual event organized and hosted by UC Davis’s BRIDGE: Pilipinx Outreach and Retention program of the Student Recruitment and Retention Center (SRRC). In this three day, two night retreat, participants will get opportunities to engage in self-reflection through informative presentations, workshops, and discussions to conceptualize for themselves what the Pilipinx identity means to them. This retreat will allow participants to build relationships and have important and relevant discussions with peers, mentors, and speakers.
The theme for this year’s Pilipinx Empowerment Retreat is “Re-discovering Consciousness.” This theme aims to highlight the critical reflection needed to come to consciousness with both ourselves and our communities. Consciousness is the unique feeling of awareness: the awareness of who we are and why we do the things we do. It encapsulates the awareness of the struggles our community faces and the hxstories of our movements. The consciousness that we have of ourselves has the ability to allow us to find a home within our family, friends, community, and ourselves; it can allow us to understand to a greater extent our journey at UC Davis. When intertwined with knowledge, skills, and action, the consciousness that we have among our communities has the potential to be an amazing strength to make lasting waves in the continuous fight for justice and liberation. It is vital that we re-discover this consciousness now more than ever.
