Southeast Asian Retreat 2017: Constellations of Resistance
This year’s Southeast Asian Retreat theme, “Constellations of Resistance,” focuses on reflecting and understanding the (collective) historical narratives that connects the Southeast Asian (SEA) community.
When we explore “Constellations of Resistance” we are recognizing that Southeast Asians have unique struggles, but that our narrative can be linked to the experience of all People of Color.
Constellations refer to the intersectionality of our identities, while Resistance refers to challenging oppression as well as envisioning change. For these reasons, the retreat hopes to bring dialogue and tangible action steps for sustainable personal & community change and growth.
This retreat will explore questions about community:
- What does community mean? Why is community important?
- How do we want our community to look? How do we want our personal relationships to look?
- And how do we envision and create a better world for marginalized communities to thrive in?
The goal of this 3 day, 2 night retreat is to build community and provide tools for self and community empowerment. This growing space is dedicated to meeting new people and making friends, sharing our narratives, gaining holistic awareness about current issues, and discussing and envisioning the change we want to see in the future.
Despite all the systems that tell us that we shouldn’t be here, we will continue resisting and building with each other as a vibrant and resilient community.
