The interdisciplinary and critical scholarship of Asian American Studies can inform the ways in which SAFE supports the Southeast Asian community on- and off-campus. If you have taken, or plan to take, any of these courses, we highly encourage you to apply for any of the positions with SAFE. However, these courses are not required for consideration in our application process.

ASA150E Southeast Asian American Experience (4)

Lecture/discussion—4 hours. Prerequisite: course 1, 2, or 3, or consent of instructor. Upper division status. Historical survey of Southeast Asian experiences with special focus on United States involvement and post 1975 migrations. Defines international and transnational conditions that led up to the large exodus and resettlement of Southeast Asians.

ASA189I Political and Social Movements (4)

Lecture—4 hours. Prerequisite: course 1, 2, or 3 and upper division standing, or consent of instructor. Intensive treatment of a topic in Asian American Studies. Politics and Social Movements.

ASA112 Asian American Women (4)

Lecture/discussion—4 hours. Prerequisite: course 1, 2, or 3, or consent of instructor. Experiences of Asian American women from major ethnic subgroups comparatively examined in their social, economic and historical contexts using theoretical perspectives from social sciences, humanities/arts: identity, racialization, immigration, gender, sexuality, labor, socialization, cultural expression, social movements and feminist theorizing.

ASA114 Asian Diasporas (4)

Lecture—4 hours. Prerequisite: course 1 or 2; upper division status or consent of instructor. Asian diasporic communities and the experiences of its members in the United States and internationally. Community building, cyberspace, gender issues, labor, transnational practices, effects of globalization, political organizing, homeland politics, humanitarian projects, citizenship and nationalism.

Student Director (SD)/Recruitment & Retention Organizing Committee (RROC) Representative

The Student Director will have oversight of SAFE’s programs and coordinators. They will work towards supporting and helping build cohesion and unity within SAFE coordinators, the SRRC, and the greater Southeast Asian community at UC Davis.

The Student Director will be responsible for:

  • Providing holistic support, supervision & programmatic guidance to all SAFE coordinators and general members (i.e. Host 1 on 1 meetings with SAFE program coordinators).

  • Facilitating weekly SAFE staff meetings.

  • Reviewing all SAFE proposals to ensure the accuracy of funding requests and alignment with SRRC values.

  • Providing continuous, ongoing evaluation of all SAFE initiatives.

  • Developing and implementing quarterly staff retreats, including a transition retreat.

  • Serving as a UC Davis SEA Leader; facilitating and organizing weekly SEA Leaders Meetings.

  • Assisting in the planning and organization of various SEA community events hosted by the SEA Leaders.

  • Attending SEA student organization meetings and other campus community events to represent the voice of the SEA community.

  • Assisting with the Southeast Asian Graduation Ceremony process as needed.

  • Serving on the Asian Pacific Islander Retention Committee (APIRC).

  • Providing guidance for the SEA Pages and supporting the Editorial Intern as needed.

  • Attending Student Director meetings to discuss various SRRC topics.

  • Attend weekly meetings with SRRC Career staff.

The Recruitment and Retention Organizing Committee (RROC) is the decision-making body of the Student Recruitment & Retention Center. As a RROC representative, the Student Director forms part of this governing board and holds voting privileges. RROC has oversight for all SRRC finances, SRRC operations and recruitment/retention initiatives. Furthermore, RROC provides advocacy surrounding issues of educational equity.

A RROC representative will be responsible for:

  • Promoting transparency between RROC and the SRRC staff.

  • Attend weekly RROC Board meetings to represent the Southeast Asian Community.

  • Provide the Southeast Asian community (SEA Leaders) with updates from the RROC Board.

  • Allocating funding to support SRRC initiatives.

  • Planning monthly staff in-service.

  • Maintaining and promoting a welcoming, inclusive environment for the overall SRRC.

  • Creating awareness to the general public of issues pertaining to your respective community.

As a RROC representative, you will have accompanying responsibilities for one of the follow specific RROC roles:

  • Internal Chair

  • Campus Community Chair

  • External Chair

  • Financial Chair

  • Secretary

  • Recruitment Chair

  • Retention Chair

Administrative Coordinator

The Administrative Coordinator supports and helps build cohesion and unity within the volunteers, interns, SAFE coordinators, the SRRC, and the greater Southeast Asian community at UC Davis.

The Administrative Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Program and event logistics such as room reservations.

  • Supporting purchase requests and submission of final expense reports.

  • Sending weekly newsletters to community members.

  • Overseeing and updating all SAFE social media accounts (e.g. Facebook, Instagram) to promote events, generate publicity, and maintain the program's consistent presence over all forums.

  • Organizing and implementing the Volunteer/Internship Program.

  • Developing & coordinating Community Empowerment programs for the Southeast Asian Community.

  • Assisting with the Southeast Asian Graduation Ceremony process as needed.

  • Planning the annual End of the Year Banquet.

  • Serving as a core member of the Administrative Committee.

Recruitment Positions

SAFE’s recruitment positions are an opportunity to interact with the Southeast Asian youth off-campus in order to promote a college-going culture. To ensure that we have healthy rates of incoming SEA students in the local Sacramento area at any higher education institution, we host weekly outreach visits to middle and high schools who have a high concentration of SEA-identified students and schools that (still) need our services.

High School Outreach Coordinator

The High School Outreach Coordinator will develop a culturally relevant, captivating, and informative outreach program for high school students in the local Sacramento/Yuba-Sutter area.

The High School Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Working closely with the Community Advisor for Recruitment and the SAFE Student Director to:

    • Establish partnerships with high school(s) that have high population of Southeast Asian students (consider schools where students are at-risk and underserved).

    • Seek support and resources.

  • Creating and sustaining positive working relationships with professional staff at respective high school sites (e.g. teachers, counselors, principal, secretary).

  • Conducting weekly high school outreach visits to 1-2 high schools with a large population of Southeast Asian students.

  • Establishing agreements with high schools over the summer with assistance from a Community Advisor (MOU: Memorandum of Understanding).

  • Creating a well developed syllabus for each quarter that will engage students in the SRRC's Holistic Initiatives to include cultural programming, advocacy, mentorship, and resources.

  • Providing guidance to high school students, ranging from freshmen to seniors, based on their individual needs.

  • Assisting high school seniors with navigating the college application process and helping students make necessary revisions to their Personal Statements.

  • Serving as the liaison for high school outreach participants to visit UC Davis.

  • Co-coordinating SAFE’s annual Southeast Asian Youth Conference (SEAYC) with Middle School Outreach Coordinator.

  • Co-coordinating the annual SRRC Recruitment event, Aggie Senior Weekend Trip, with fellow Recruitment coordinators.

  • Serving as a core member of the SRRC's Recruitment Committee.

  • Access to a reliable mode of transportation to travel to outreach sites AND/OR having a valid driver's license is highly encouraged

Middle School Outreach Coordinator

The Middle School Outreach Coordinator will develop a culturally relevant, empowering, and informative outreach program for middle school students in the Sacramento/Yuba-Sutter area to promote the importance of educational advancement amongst youth in the Southeast Asian community.

The Middle School Outreach Coordinator is responsible for:

  • Working closely with the Community Advisor for Recruitment and the SAFE Student Director to:

    • Establish partnerships with middle school(s) that have high population of Southeast Asian students (consider schools where students are at-risk and underserved).

    • Seek support and resources.

  • Creating and sustaining positive working relationships with professional staff at respective middle school sites (e.g. teachers, counselors, principal, secretary).

  • Building rapport with parents/guardians of outreach participants: creating and sending a letter about services, and offering a fall parent/guardian workshop/orientation.

  • Establishing agreements with middle schools over the summer with assistance from a Community Advisor (MOU: Memorandum of Understanding).

  • Conducting weekly or regular middle school outreach visits to 1 or 2 middle schools with a large population of Southeast Asian students.

  • Creating a well developed syllabus for each quarter that will engage students in the SRRC's Holistic Initiatives to include cultural programming, advocacy, mentorship, and resources.

  • Providing guidance for at risk middle school students based on their individual needs.

  • Supporting students through educational advocacy.

  • Co-coordinating SAFE’s annual Southeast Asian Youth Conference (SEAYC) with the High School Outreach Coordinator.

  • Co-coordinating the annual SRRC Recruitment event, Aggie Senior Weekend Trip, with fellow Recruitment coordinators.

  • Serving as a core member of the SRRC's Recruitment Committee.

Retention Positions

Once students enter an institution of higher education, especially UC Davis, one of the priorities of the Retention Coordinators are to make sure incoming students thrive in college and graduate from one of the top universities of in the nation. SAFE’s retention positions aim to provide various resources to help retain our students such as providing safe and healthy spaces ranging from academic, financial, emotional, and/or social issues.

Community Development and Advocacy Coordinator

The Community Development and Advocacy Coordinator has the unique opportunity to implement programs that address the sociopolitical and cultural issues that are prevalent in the SEA communities at UC Davis.

The Community Development and Advocacy Coordinator will be responsible for developing and coordinating retention programs and strategies in the following areas:

  • Community Development: coordinating large-scale community events to promote a sense of belonging, such as SEA Mic or SEA BBQ and/or inform community about issues facing the SEA community.

  • Cultural Identity: defining and/or deconstructing what Southeast Asian identity means at UC Davis; focusing on intersectional identities within the SEA Community as related to issues of educational equity; Coordinating the annual Southeast Asian Retreat.

  • Gender & Sexuality: Supporting the Southeast Asian queer community; facilitating spaces that are inclusive and welcoming of all identities while encouraging the understanding of multiple, intersectional identities.

  • Health & Wellness: Promoting the wellbeing of both physical and mental health; sharing health & wellness resources.

Additionally, the Community Development and Advocacy Coordinator will:

  • Work closely with the SAFE Student Director and Community Advisor for Retention to develop programs (ex. Creating budgets and proposals for all events/programming).

  • Maintain relationships with other resources on campus such as Asian American Studies, CCC API coordinators, APATH, LGBTQIARC, WRRC, EOP, the API Retention Committee, etc.

  • Stay informed and connected with the Southeast Asian community at large to guide programming efforts.

  • Serve as a core member of the SRRC’s Retention Committee.

Student Academic Achievement Coordinator

The Holistic Retention Coordinator has the opportunity to implement programs that empower students to excel in college, positively improve their well-being, and provide leadership & mentorship opportunities in the SEA community in order to increase a tight-knit relationship with the SEA communities on-campus.

The Holistic Retention Coordinator will be responsible for developing and coordinating retention programs and strategies in the following areas:

  • Academic Excellence: Organizing SEA Study Halls along with other SEA orgs; Working closely with the Asian Pacific Islander Retention Committee, Asian Pacific American Theme House, and the Asian American Studies department to identify and address any issues that may be impacting the academic success of Southeast Asian students.

  • Leadership Development: sharing leadership opportunities and resources with the community.

  • Mentorship: Coordinating SAFE’s Mentorship Program, C.A.R.E.: Companions Always Ready to Empower.

  • Life After College Success: Co-hosting a Pathway to Graduate School workshop with the SRRC’s GAAAP, SAFE alumni, and/or SEA graduate/professional school students; serving as a resource for peers by hosting mock interviews; organizing & collaborating with SEA Grad Coordinators to host a workshop for graduating seniors.

Additionally, the Student Academic Achievement Coordinator will:

  • Work closely with the SAFE Student Director and Community Advisor for Retention to develop programs (ex. Creating budgets and proposals for all events/programming).

  • Maintain relationships with other resources on campus such as Asian American Studies, CCC API coordinators, APATH, LGBTQIARC, WRRC, EOP, the API Retention Committee, etc.

  • Stay informed and connected with the Southeast Asian community at large to guide programming efforts.

  • Serve as a core member of the SRRC’s Retention Committee.

All staff will be responsible for:

  • Attending SRRC Spring Class and SRRC Summer Formation.

  • Attending quarterly SAFE Staff Retreats.

  • Attending weekly staff meeting, weekly or bi-weekly one-on-ones with your Student Director, SRRC In-Service, and any meeting depending on your position.

  • Creating a budget and proposal for each activity/event or strategy.

  • Ensuring that activities/events are catered to serve Southeast Asian students.

  • Evaluating respective programs on a consistent basis and gathering feedback from participants.

  • Representing SAFE and the SRRC professionally, as well as being able to articulate the mission and goals of both SAFE and the SRRC to staff, faculty, students and other audiences.

  • Advocating and upholding the values of SAFE and the SRRC throughout all programs.

  • Coordinating intern and volunteer projects to provide them with valuable experience.

  • Maintaining a 2.5 cumulative GPA and full-time student status.

  • Working with students to holistically address their needs.

  • Supporting major community events.

  • Being active in the greater SEA community to ensure that the needs of the target population are being addressed.

  • Maintaining consistent communication/correspondence with partners/collaborators as it pertains to programming efforts.

  • Assisting SAFE Staff as needed.
