SOL y LUNA Positions

The following courses are highly recommended for all SOL y LUNA positions:

The interdisciplinary and critical scholarship of Chicanx Studies can inform the ways in which SOL y LUNA supports the Chicanx/Latinx community on- and off-campus. If you have taken, or plan to take, any of these courses, we highly encourage you to apply for any of the positions with SOL y LUNA. However, these courses are not required for consideration in our application process.

CHI 10. Introduction to Chicana/o Studies (4)

Lecture—3 hours; discussion—1 hour. Analysis of the situation of the Chicanx/Latinx (Mexican-American) people, emphasizing their history, literature, political movements, education and related areas. Offered in alternate years.

CHI 50. Chicana and Chicano Culture (4)

Lecture—3 hours; discussion—1 hour. Interdisciplinary survey of Chicana/o cultural representation in the 20th century. Examines Chicana/o culture within a national and transnational context. Explores how Chicano cultural forms and practices intersect with social/material forces, intellectual formations and cultural discourses.

Student Director (SD)/Recruitment & Retention Organizing Committee (RROC) Representative

The Student Director will have oversight of SOL y LUNA’s programs and coordinators. The Student Director will work towards supporting and helping build cohesion and unity within SOL y LUNA coordinators, the SRRC, and the greater Caribbean, Latinx & Chicanx student community at UC Davis.

The Student Director will be responsible for:

  • Providing holistic support, supervision & programmatic guidance to all SOL y LUNA coordinators and general members (i.e. Host 1 on 1 meetings with SOL y LUNA program coordinators)
  • Facilitating weekly SOL y LUNA staff meetings
  • Reviewing all SOL y LUNA proposals to ensure the accuracy of funding requests and alignment with SRRC values
  • Providing continuous, ongoing evaluation of all SOL y LUNA initiatives
  • Developing and implementing quarterly staff retreats, including a transition retreat
  • Serving as a representative in any Chicanx/Latinx campus boards
  • Maintain connections with other resources on campus such as Chicanx Studies, CCC Chicanx/ Latinx community Coordinator and LRCD coordinators, CASA Cuauhtemoc, LGBTQIARC, WRRC, EOP, the Chicanx Latinx Retention Initiative, etc.
  • Assisting in the planning and organization of various SOL y LUNA events/activities
  • Attending Student Director meetings to discuss various SRRC topics
  • Attending weekly meetings with SRRC Career Staff

The Recruitment and Retention Organizing Committee (RROC) is the decision-making body of the Student Recruitment & Retention Center. As a RROC representative, the Student Director forms part of this governing board and holds voting privileges. RROC has oversight for all SRRC finances, SRRC operations and recruitment/retention initiatives. Furthermore, RROC provides advocacy surrounding issues of educational equity.

A RROC representative will be responsible for:

  • Promoting transparency between RROC and the SRRC staff
  • Attend weekly RROC Board meetings to represent the Chicanx/Latinx Community
  • Provide the Chicanx/Latinx community with updates from the RROC Board 
  • Allocating funding to support SRRC initiatives
  • Planning monthly staff in-service
  • Maintaining and promoting a welcoming, inclusive environment for the overall SRRC
  • Creating awareness to the general public of issues pertaining to your respective community

AS a RROC representative, you will have accompanying responsibilities for one of the follow specific RROC roles:

Administrative Coordinator

The Administrative Coordinator supports and helps build cohesion and unity within the volunteers, interns, SOL y LUNA coordinators, the SRRC, and the greater ChicanX LatinX student community at UC Davis.

The Administrative Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Program and event logistics such as room reservations, etc.
  • Supporting purchase requests and submission of final expense reports
  • Facilitating regular communication with community members (i.e. newsletters, listservs, emails etc.)
  • Overseeing and updating all SOL y LUNA social media accounts (e.g. Facebook, Instagram) to promote events, generate publicity, and maintain the program's consistent presence over all forums
  • Organizing and implementing the Volunteer/Internship Program
  • Developing & coordinating Community Empowerment programs for the Chicanx/Latinx Community
  • Serving as a core member of the Administrative Committee
  • Organizing google drive, calendar, and meeting notes for easier accessibility

Recruitment Positions

Community Youth Development Coordinator

The Community Youth Development Coordinator will partner with local Chicanx/Latinx youth programs/centers (e.g., MEChA, SAYS Summit, Latino Center of Art & Culture, etc.) to empower students to pursue their personal and educational endeavors. By outreaching to Chi/Lat youth programs and centers, the coordinator will discuss local issues and organize methods to effectively address, visibilize, and transform the needs of youth in the community. Additionally, the coordinator will provide mentorship and support through educational workshops ranging from Latinx history, culture, higher education, creative expression, and self-care.

The Community Youth Development Coordinator is responsible for:

  • Working closely with the Community Advisor for Recruitment and the SOL y LUNA Student Director to: 
    • Establish partnerships with local Chicanx/Latinx Youth Coalitions that have high population of Chicanx/Latinx students (consider schools where students are at-risk and underserved)
    • Seek support and resources
    • Providing guidance for at-risk youth based on their individual needs
  • Creating and sustaining positive working relationships with professional staff at respective high school and middle school sites (e.g. teachers, counselors, principal, secretary)
  • Coordinating on-campus events for school groups or programs with large populations of Chicanx/Latinx students
  • Supporting the High School Outreach Coordinator in regular outreaches to local Chicanx/Latinx Coalitions or schools
  • Co-coordinating SOL y LUNA’s annual Caribbean, Latine y Chicanx Youth Empowerment Conference (CLCYEC) with the High School Outreach Coordinator
  • Co-coordinating the annual SRRC Recruitment event, Aggie Senior Weekend Trip, with fellow Recruitment coordinators
  • Serving as a core member of the SRRC's Recruitment Committee

Requirement: 

  • MUST have a valid driver’s license
  • Access to a reliable mode of transportation to travel to outreach sites AND/OR having a valid driver's license is highly encouraged.

High School Outreach Coordinator

The High School Outreach Coordinator will develop a culturally relevant, captivating, and informative outreach program for high school students in the local Woodland/Sacramento/Bay area.

The High School Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Working closely with the Community Advisor for Recruitment and the SOL y LUNA Student Director to: 
    • Establish partnerships with high school(s) that have high population of Chicanx/Latinx students (consider schools where students are at-risk and underserved)
    • Seek support and resources
  • Creating and sustaining positive working relationships with professional staff at respective high school sites (e.g. teachers, counselors, principal, secretary)
  • Building rapport with parents/guardians of outreach participants: creating and sending a letter about services, and offering a fall parent/guardian workshop/orientation
  • Establishing agreements with high schools over the summer with assistance from a Community Advisor (MOU: Memorandum of Understanding)
  • Conducting weekly or regular outreach visits to 1 or 2 high schools with a large population of Chicanx/Latinx students
    • Collaborating with UC Davis departments and student organizations to co-host workshops (ex: MEChA, CENSOCA, Danzantes del Alma, Undocumented Student Resource Center, EOP, etc.)
  • Creating a well-developed syllabus for each quarter that will engage students in the SRRC's Holistic Initiatives to include cultural programming, advocacy, mentorship, and resources
  • Assisting high school seniors with navigating the college application process and helping students make necessary revisions to their Personal Statements
  • Serving as the liaison for high school outreach participants to visit UC Davis
  • Co-coordinating SOL y LUNA’s annual Caribbean, Latine y Chicanx Youth Empowerment Conference (CLCYEC) with the Community Youth Development Coordinator
  • Co-coordinating the annual SRRC Recruitment event, Aggie Senior Weekend Trip, with fellow Recruitment coordinators
  • Serving as a core member of the SRRC's Recruitment Committee

Retention Positions

Identity Development Coordinator

The Identity Development Coordinator aims to foster a sense of ChicanX/LatinX identity by discussing issues and commonly misinterpreted topics.

The Identity Development Coordinator will be responsible for developing and coordinating retention programs and strategies in the following areas:

  • Gender & Sexuality: Creating a sense of community and facilitating spaces that center the experiences of queer Chicanx/Latinx students
    • Encouraging identity exploration for all students and fostering understanding of all intersectional identities
  • Health & Wellness: Promoting the well-being of both physical and mental health; sharing health & wellness resources
  • Community Development: coordinating large-scale community events to promote a sense of belonging and/or inform the community about issues facing the Chicanx/Latinx community
  • Cultural Identity: defining and/or deconstructing what it means to be Chicanx/Latinx at UC Davis; focusing on intersectional and/or diasporic identities within the Chicanx/Latinx community as related to issues of educational equity
    • Includes being intentional about centering Central American, South American, and Caribbean students

Additionally, the Identity Development Coordinator will:

  • Co-coordinate the annual Caribbean, Latine y Chicanx Leadership Retreat (CLCER) along with the Student Academic Achievement Coordinator
  • Work closely with the SOL y LUNA Student Director and Community Advisor for Retention to develop programs (ex. Creating budgets and proposals for all events/programming)
  • Collaborate with other resources on campus such as Chicanx Studies, CCC Chicanx/ Latinx community Coordinator and LRCD coordinators, CASA Cuauhtemoc, LGBTQIARC, WRRC, EOP, the Chicanx Latinx Retention Initiative, etc.
  • Stay informed and connected with the Chicanx/Latinx community at large to guide programming efforts
  • Serve as a core member of the SRRC's Retention Committee

Student Academic Achievement Coordinator

The Student Achievement Coordinator aims to empower the Chicanx/Latinx community by providing resources and information to ensure the holistic achievement of Chicanx/Latinx students at UC Davis. This support comes in many forms and areas, such as the transition from high school to college, academic preparation and readiness, leadership opportunities, building professionalism to empower students to graduate from UC Davis and to successfully build a career post-graduation.

The Student Achievement Coordinator will be responsible for developing and coordinating retention programs and strategies in the following areas:

  • Academic Excellence: Working closely with CCLASS, the Chicanx Studies Department, EOP, and other partners to address any issues that may be impacting the academic success of students within the Chicanx/Latinx community
  • Leadership Development: Co-coordinating the annual Chicanx/Latinx Leadership Retreat with support from the Identity Development Coordinator, sharing leadership opportunities and resources with the community
  • Mentorship: Coordinating SOL y LUNA’s mentorship program, F.A.M.: Familia and Mentorship Program
  • Life After College Success: Co-hosting a Pathway to Graduate School workshop in partnership with SRRC’s GAAAP, SOL y LUNA alumni, and/or Chicanx/Latinx graduate/professional school students; organizing a workshop series for graduating seniors

Additionally, the Student Academic Achievement Coordinator will:

  • Work closely with the SOL y LUNA Student Director and Community Advisor for Retention to develop programs (ex. Creating budgets and proposals for all events/programming)
  • Collaborate with other resources on campus such as Chicanx Studies, CCC Chicanx/ Latinx community Coordinator and LRCD coordinators, CASA Cuauhtemoc, LGBTQIARC, WRRC, EOP, the Chicanx Latinx Retention Initiative, etc.
  • Stay informed and connected with the Chicanx/Latinx community at large to guide programming efforts
  • Serve as a core member of the SRRC's Retention Committee

All staff will be responsible for:

  • Attending SRRC Spring Class and SRRC Summer Formation.

  • Attending quarterly SOL y LUNA Staff Retreats.

  • Attending weekly staff meetings, weekly or bi-weekly one-on-ones with your student director AND the Community Advisor, SRRC In Service, and any meeting depending on your position.

  • Creating a budget and proposal for each activity/event or strategy.

  • Ensuring that activities/events are catered to serve the Chicanx/Latinx community.

  • Evaluating respective programs on a regular basis and gathering feedback from your participants.

  • Representing SOL y LUNA and the SRRC professionally, as well as being able to articulate the mission and goals of both SOL y LUNA and the SRRC to staff, faculty, students, and other audiences.

  • Advocating and upholding the values of SOL y LUNA and the SRRC throughout all programs.

  • Coordinating intern and volunteer projects to provide them with valuable experience.

  • Maintaining a cumulative 2.5 GPA and full-time student status.

  • Working with students to holistically address their needs.

  • Supporting major community events.

  • Being active in the greater Chicanx/Latinx community to ensure that the needs of the target population are being addressed.

  • Maintaining consistent communication/correspondence with partners/collaborators as it pertains to programming efforts.

  • Assisting SOL y LUNA Staff as needed.
