Black Leadership Retreat 2017: Freedom in Our Blackness
Black Leadership Retreat (BLR) is an annual event organized and hosted by UC Davis' ACE: African Diaspora Cultivating Education program of the Student Recruitment & Retention Center.
The goal for BLR is to inspire participants to rediscover themselves in a new way. For many people, this will be the first time they experience workshops around their identity and well being. BLR aims to educate participants, while still building long lasting relationships within the community.
The theme of BLR this year is "Freedom in Our Blackness." The theme came from two separate quotes: "Freedom by any means necessary," and "Black is beautiful." Combined, the theme is a representation of the community's resistance during trying times and its ability to preserve self-love all at the same time. This year's theme aims to discuss ways to organize in our current political climate, but also ways to take care of the self.
